Is describing it more significant than knowing it or understanding it? Each creator has his own unique methodology, language and symbology, his own way of telling it. Universal laws are there to be bent. Unlock the universe, decode the man.
Mario Cioni was born in 1961 in Melbourne, Australia to Italian parents. He has been actively creative for most of his life.
Cioni studied Fine Art and received a Diploma of Art and Design (Fine Art) from Monash University in 1982, a Graduate Diploma in Education from Monash University in 1983 and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Melbourne in 1986.
His artworks tend to revolve around the interrelationship, interconnectedness and wholeness of things. They range from highly abstracted gestural exertions to quirky symbol laden figurative pieces. Cioni draws his inspiration from a wide variety of sources including living in inner Melbourne, the internal dynamism of the human form, anthropology, working with teenagers and his Australian/European heritage.
What is evident in all of Cioni’s work is a confident, dynamic and dramatic relationship between passionate mark making, colour sensitivity and rhythmic harmonies. Each work evolves over time, they are each a unique and autonomous expression of a variety of feelings, thoughts and experiences. Colour, geometry, music and the sound of the brush or chalk striking the working surface factor in the evolution of his artworks.
“It is important to me that each piece has a strong immediate visual impact; intense, evocative and sensual yet can also be savoured and deciphered over time.”
The observer is encouraged to absorb, interpret and interact with the visual triggers that make up each piece. Some of these triggers are obvious; some are more cryptic, spicy and playful. The application of materials in a rhythmic and lyrical way, whether through conscious actions or “pentimenti”, provides the images with a dynamic energy and strong presence. To Cioni, the act of developing an image is as important as the final artwork.
Cioni’s artworks are not only engaging, though provoking and aesthetically pleasing, they are arguably highly passionate and incredibly sensual experiences in themselves.
